Avoid impulse buying as a cosplayer

Avoid impulse buying as a cosplayer

As a cosplayer, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of finding the perfect prop or material, leading to impulse buying. OR you may be shopping and something is on sale, so you buy it without realizing you have it at home stored away. To avoid this pitfall, set a budget and stick to it, prioritizing essential items over wants. Take time to think before making a purchase, asking yourself if the item is truly necessary and if you have a plan for using it. Additionally, consider implementing a 30-day waiting period before buying non-essential items, helping you determine if the purchase is something you truly need.

Step 1: Plan and Research

1. Define your cosplay goals: Identify the characters and costumes you want to create. Do any of the characters have something in common?
2. Research and gather reference images: Collect pictures of the character, costume, and props. This also includes screenshots or even fan art (please do credit the artist and ask permission to recreate it as a cosplay.)
3. Create a shopping list: Write down the necessary materials, fabrics, and supplies. If you can use the same exact material for several cosplays you are making, purchase that rather than 2 different types of fabric, doubling the costs.

Step 2: Set a Budget and Stick to It

1. Determine your budget: Decide how much you can afford to spend on cosplay supplies. With setting a budget, remember you may have to buy things for an emergency, so plan a little more for your budget so no surprises hold you back!
2. Prioritize needs over wants: Distinguish between essential and non-essential items. Are there any parts of your cosplay that you can cut out and not make? This can save time and money if its a detail that can go un-noticed.
3. Use the 30-day rule: Wait 30 days before buying non-essential items to ensure they're still needed. Make a list of what you are thinking of buying and come back to it in 30 days to see if that is still something that you are wanting to purchase.

Step 3: Avoid Temptation and Stay Focused

1. Avoid browsing without a purpose: Refrain from browsing online stores or thrift shops without a specific shopping list. You can easily spend too much on cosplay materials that you will never use.
2. Use cash instead of credit: Paying with cash can help you stick to your budget.
3. Remove shopping apps: Consider deleting shopping apps or turning off notifications to reduce temptation. When finding an item for your cosplay, think about it before purchasing.
